Satire Centers

All Digital Projects are UP!
To see them or link to them on your DP, go to YouTube, and find the channel for TheLoriTeacher.  Your video should be there!  If you had an audio track, I have set that track to your digital art piece as a video.  Enjoy!

There is still a shocking amount of stuff left in my room from exhibition.  Lights, tables, stools, pillows...  I do not want it!  Please take it home today or tomorrow.

Satirical Devices Presentations
In your small group, present your satirical device poster to your group.  Make sure they all understand the device.

Satire Centers
There are 6 centers.  You must do all of them in your group.  Resources are linked below.  For each center, you need to write down the following in your notes:

  1. What or who is the target of your satire?  Be as specific as possible in describing it!
  2. What methods are used?  Reference the list of satirical devices for this.
  3. What is the purpose and message of the satire?  What is it trying to say?
  4. What stood out to you about this satire?  Method, issue, art, humor, other?  Explain why this was so striking.

Website is linked above.

Center 3: New Yorker Cover

Center 4: More Money = Better Than

Center 5: Darfur Cartoon

Center 6: Albi the Racist Dragon

Satire Response

  1. “A Modest Proposal” is an ironic essay: the author deliberately writes what he does not mean.  What is the real thesis?  Is there more than one?
  2. Does the essay merely function as a satirical attack?  Does Swift ever present any serious proposals for improving conditions?  If so, where?  What are they?
  3. Is satire an effective technique? Why/why not?
HOMEWORK
Finish Satire Response writing.  Typed or handwritten.  DUE: Start of class, Friday.

  4. On the back:  What is Swift's message?

See satire notes linked above.

We will run through a FULL REHEARSAL of exhibition on both of these days.  Be ready with your introduction!

Exhibition Night
Exhibition schedule is linked here:  Lori's Exhibition Schedule

Exhibition Night Expectations

  • You will stay most of the night.  When you are not performing for me, or with your Spanish project, you are looking at other exhibits or supporting your classmates in the poetry cafe.
  • You will be down by Lori's room at least 10 minutes before you are scheduled to perform.  We may be running a little ahead of schedule, and I do NOT want to have to track anyone down!  Keep an eye on the time, and be in the room or right outside of it before you are scheduled to go on.
  • You will be in professional dress.  You know what this means.
  • You will behave professionally at all times.  You will have some free time during this exhibition- please do not behave like miscreants, ruffians, or hooligans.
