Lexus and the Olive Tree: Reading and Chart

Starter 3: Where is Your Stuff From?
  1. Look at three items you have, list what it is, where it’s made (clothing tags, electronics, etc.)
  2. Why are so many things made globally, not locally?  Try to list at least 3 reasons.
  3. How would your life change if you could only shop for goods that were made locally? What would you have to give up? What benefits would there be?

Lexus and the Olive Tree: Reading
  1. Read and annotate to the end of the article
  2. Mark thesis
  3. Circle and define vocabulary
  4. Highlight and underline main ideas
  5. At least 2 substantive annotations per page (no emotional reactions!)

Lexus and Olive Tree: Cold War vs. Globalization Chart
In paragraph 7, Friedman lists 8 key defining characteristics of the Cold War era.  He then compares the defining characteristics of Globalization to the defining characteristics of the Cold War in the rest of the essay
  1. Underline all 8 defining characteristics listed in paragraph 7
  2. Find them for globalization
  3. Create a diagram that compares Cold War to Globalization (see example below)
  4. For each characteristic, you should:
    1. Summarize what he is saying about the Cold War/Globalization
    2. Provide an example.

I've done one for you in the example chart below.  You should complete the chart!

Compare the Cold War dominant rules to Globalization's dominant culture, as Friedman doesn't do a 1 to 1 comparison for these.

Cold War
Globalization
Division: World was divided into two camps.
Example: Berlin Wall
Integration: World is connected and interwoven in many ways.
Example: The Web

LatOT Writing (this is working ahead...don't worry if you don't get to this today!)
You are going to write 3 solid paragraphs for this.  They must be TYPED!
  1. Define globalization in a well-organized TEA paragraph.  You should definitely quote from the article to do this!
  2. What is Friedman’s position on globalization?  Does he fall on the pro or con side?  Why do you think this?
  3. Based on what you currently know about globalization, what are some of the benefits to this system?  What are some of the downsides?  (QUOTE FROM THE ARTICLE!)

HOMEWORK:  Finish Cold War vs. Globalization comparison chart above.  DUE: Start of class, Thursday.
