Jihad vs. McWorld Introduction

Starter 8

1. What are the three ways this video argues that sweatshops pull people out of poverty?  List them.
2. How convincing is this argument?  Why?
3. What questions would you want answered in order to make a more informed judgment on the real impact of sweatshops?  List at least 3.

NAFTA Sharing
In groups, discuss questions about NAFTA based on your paragraph and cartoon.

Too Dumb For Complex Texts?
The article linked above makes the argument that many students in the US are unprepared for college because they lack the strategies to read difficult texts effectively.  If you were absent, you should choose one of the following sections to read:
  1. A Willingness to Probe
  2. The Capacity for Uninterrupted Thinking
  3. A Receptivity to Deep Thinking
For the section you read, jot down answers to the following two questions:
  1. Describe in your own words the reading strategy the author describes in this section.
  2. Why does the author think this strategy is hard for students today?
Now discuss/think about:
  1. How often do you use the strategies described in this article?  Why?
  2. Which strategy is easiest for you?  Which is hardest?
  3. Which one, if used, do you think will most improve your understanding of hard texts?
Okay, here it is.  Possibly the hardest text you'll read all year!  For the first chunk of reading use the reading strategies we talked about the Jihad vs. McWorld Vocabulary list.  Read and annotate to the top of page 5.  Stop when you get to the section about Jihad.  For your annotations, you need to:
  1. Find and label the thesis (it's on the first page this time!)
  2. Make at least TWO annotations PER PAGE.  These must be substantive!  No emotional reactions!  In your annotations, you could...
    • Make connections to other texts/ideas
    • Ask questions
    • Argue with the author
    • Have deep thoughts and/or epiphanies
    • Extend or apply the ideas in the text
HOMEWORK:  None!  Take the night off.  You will have most of class tomorrow to finish reading this first section.
