LatOT Discussion and Writing

Starter 4

1. List 2 symbols from this carton, and explain what each represents/means.
2. What's the message of this cartoon?
3. Do you agree or disagree with the perspective expressed here?  Why/why not?  (It's okay to be in the middle here!)

LatOT Discussion
  1. Thesis Statement: Compare what each of you said.  Choose the best one (most likely to be the thesis) and explain why.  Remember the purpose of a thesis!
  2. What is Friedman’s opinion of globalization, based on what you’ve read in this article?  Is he for it?  Against it?  A mix?
  3. What are the pros and cons of globalization, as you see them so far?
  4. In paragraph 25, Friedman talks about how the Electronic Herd and the Supermarkets can trigger the downfall of governments.  What does this mean for democracy?
  5. How do you see what Friedman describes in your own life?  How accurate do you think his description of globalization is?
  6. Do you think you, as an individual, are more or less powerful in a globalized system?  Why?  How do you exercise your power or influence the larger systems around you?
LatOT Writing

These must be TYPED.  All paragraphs must be organized, and must use evidence from the article to support your position.  You may draw on anything we’ve done in class so far to help you respond to these questions.  You must answer the first question, and then you should choose one additional question to respond to, for a total of 2 paragraphs (if you want to write more, go for it!)

  1. REQUIRED QUESTION:  Define globalization in a well-organized TEA paragraph.  You should definitely quote from the article to do this!  (MUST ANSWER)
Choose one more from the following list to answer:

  1. What is Friedman’s position on globalization?  Does he fall on the pro or con side?  What’s your evidence for this?
  2. Based on what you currently know about globalization, what are some of the biggest benefits to this system?  What are some of the most significant downsides?
  3. In paragraph 25, Friedman talks about how the Electronic Herd and the Supermarkets can trigger the downfall of governments.  What does this mean for democracy?
  4. Do you think you, as an individual, are more or less powerful in a globalized system?  Why?  How do you exercise your power or influence the larger systems around you?
  5. What types of violence do you think are most present in the globalized world?  Choose 2 or 3, and talk about how they are present.
  6. Look back at the chart you made.  It describes 8 shifts that happened from the Cold War era to the Globalization era.  Which 2 shifts do you think are most important?  Why?
  7. How do you see what Friedman describes in your own life?  Make connections to specific things he talks about in the article.
