Too Dumb For Complex Texts?
The article linked above makes the argument that many students in the US are unprepared for college because they lack the strategies to read difficult texts effectively.  If you were absent, you should choose one of the following sections to read:

For the section you read, jot down answers to the following two questions:

  2. Which strategy is easiest for you?  Which is hardest?
  3. Which one, if used, do you think will most improve your understanding of hard texts?
Okay, here it is.  Possibly the hardest text you'll read all year!  For the first chunk of reading use the reading strategies we talked about the Jihad vs. McWorld Vocabulary list.  Read and annotate to the top of page 5.  Stop when you get to the section about Jihad.  For your annotations, you need to:
  1. Find and label the thesis (it's on the first page this time!)

Transnational Capital Auction

Starter 5: Trade Dilemma

Most people agree that the government of Burma(known also as Myanmar) is repressive. TheU.S. State Department issued a report saying that Burmese “soldiers have committed serious human rights abuses, including extra judicial killing and rape.” Human rights organizations have documented the widespread use of forced labor. In order to protest human rights abuses there, the government of Massachusetts passed a law saying that it will not purchase major goods or services from any company that has investments in Burma.

The European Union and Japan complained that this was a violation of free trade because what is important about a good is the product itself, not how it was produced or who produced it. The National Foreign Trade Council, representing 580 U.S. companies — 346 of which do business with Burma — agreed. They said that Massachusetts has no right to pick and choose whom it will buy from based on anything other than the price and the quality of goods to be provided— period.
  1. Do you agree with the position of the National Foreign Trade Council?  Why/why not?
  2. In general, what is more important: protecting the free flow of goods and services, or the right of individual nations to make rules for themselves?  Explain your answer.

TURN IN STARTERS 1-5

Choose THREE of the questions in the document linked above to respond to in writing.  Responses are due next TUESDAY.  They must be typed!

LatOT Discussion
  1. Thesis Statement: Compare what each of you said.  Choose the best one (most likely to be the thesis) and explain why.  Remember the purpose of a thesis!
  2. What is Friedman’s opinion of globalization, based on what you’ve read in this article?  Is he for it?  Against it?  A mix?
  3. What are the pros and cons of globalization, as you see them so far?
  4. In paragraph 25, Friedman talks about how the Electronic Herd and the Supermarkets can trigger the downfall of governments.  What does this mean for democracy?

  6. Do you think you, as an individual, are more or less powerful in a globalized system?  Why?  How do you exercise your power or influence the larger systems around you?
LatOT Writing

These must be TYPED.  All paragraphs must be organized, and must use evidence from the article to support your position.  You may draw on anything we’ve done in class so far to help you respond to these questions.  You must answer the first question, and then you should choose one additional question to respond to, for a total of 2 paragraphs (if you want to write more, go for it!)

  1. REQUIRED QUESTION:  Define globalization in a well-organized TEA paragraph.  You should definitely quote from the article to do this!  (MUST ANSWER)
Choose one more from the following list to answer:

  1. What is Friedman’s position on globalization?  Does he fall on the pro or con side?  What’s your evidence for this?
  2. Based on what you currently know about globalization, what are some of the biggest benefits to this system?  What are some of the most significant downsides?

  4. Do you think you, as an individual, are more or less powerful in a globalized system?  Why?  How do you exercise your power or influence the larger systems around you?
  5. What types of violence do you think are most present in the globalized world?  Choose 2 or 3, and talk about how they are present.
  6. Look back at the chart you made.  It describes 8 shifts that happened from the Cold War era to the Globalization era.  Which 2 shifts do you think are most important?  Why?
  7. How do you see what Friedman describes in your own life?  Make connections to specific things he talks about in the article.
Writing Assessment
Your LatOT writing will be graded on the following:
  1. Organization- Are your paragraphs well organized, with a clear topic sentence, evidence, and ample analysis?  Are they easy to follow?
  2. Evidence- Are you using evidence from LatOT or other texts?  Does the evidence make sense in the contxt of your argument?  Are your quotes set up correctly?
  3. Careful Thinking- How well are you explaining your ideas?  Are you thinking critically and carefully about what you are saying?  Are you making connections for your reader, and explaining your evidence?
  4. Sentence Craft- Are your sentences grammatically correct?  Are you using varied types of sentences?
  5. Proofreading- Spellcheck and proofread carefully!
  6. Purpose/Focus- Are you answering the question?  Is your perspective clear?
