Starter 3: Watch the video above.  What does he say are the possible benefits and downfalls of the future?  (I suggest making a T-Chart for this).  What is the most interesting point he made?  Why?  Try to connect that point to yourself.

Jihad vs. McWorld
  1. Seminar article for this week- on page 215 of your blue reader
  2. Talks about 2 forces in the globalizing world: Jihad and McWorld.  Asks: "What are these forces?," and, "What are their implications for democracy?"
  3. Read, annotate, vocab
    • Read to page 220, paragraph 2 by tomorrow.
    • Need at least 3 annotations per page.  Annotations can be questions, connections, challenges, agreements or disagreements, reactions, comments, summaries.  Underlining and highlighting DO NOT COUNT as annotating!
    • Vocab: Circle the words, infer their meaning, then dictionary check and write the definition in the margin.

Communism vs. Capitalism, Hegemony

Starter 2: What is the message of this cartoon?  Do you agree or disagree with the message?  Why?

Galtung Jigsaw: Get a group with people who have the different violence distinctions.  Share posters, definitions, and examples, and take notes on other distinctions.

Capitalism vs. Communism: In your group, go through the grid handout and answer the two questions on the bottom (discuss first, then write).  Then, develop a short (1 min) skit that illustrates the ideal and real of either capitalism or communism.

Hegemony Lecture and Notes: Take notes during lecture on cultural and economic hegemony.

  6. A real life example that also explains how the example connects to your definition
