Communism vs. Capitalism, Hegemony

Starter 2: What is the message of this cartoon?  Do you agree or disagree with the message?  Why?

Galtung Jigsaw: Get a group with people who have the different violence distinctions.  Share posters, definitions, and examples, and take notes on other distinctions.

Capitalism vs. Communism: In your group, go through the grid handout and answer the two questions on the bottom (discuss first, then write).  Then, develop a short (1 min) skit that illustrates the ideal and real of either capitalism or communism.

Genocide DP and Project Reflection

DP Requirements
1.       Picture of the project, and a picture of you with the project (at least 2 pictures)

2.       IF PROJECT IS DIGITAL (video, slideshow, website)- either embed the project in your DP, or post a link to where people can view it elsewhere.

3.       Writing aspects of your project (if substantial—no need to include tiny quotes/phrases that were displayed)

4.       Artist Statement

Project Reflection

This project reflection will serve as your reflection for your DP, and for your self-assessment.  For your final grade on the project, we will meet and discuss your assessment and my opinion, and come to a final percentage.  Each of the following questions must be answered in complete and well-organized paragraphs.  When in doubt, use the TEA structure!

1.       When you think about this project, what are you most proud of and why?  This could be a particular aspect of your final product, part of your work process, a specific revision you made…

2.       If you had 1 more week to work on this project, what would you change/add to make it more amazing? 

3.       Of the categories on the rubric, which do you think your project is strongest in?  Explain your answer with specific examples from your project, and explain how you were able to make this so strong.

4.       Of the categories on the rubric, which do you think your project is weakest in?  Explain your answer with specific examples from your project, and talk about why this is the case.  You should also talk about what you could have done to improve this aspect.

5.       Score yourself in each of the 5 categories.  Then, explain what you think the final grade should be for your project, based on your scores on the rubric.  Give a letter grade and percentage.

  1. Artist Statements have been emailed to you with my feedback.  For the final draft, please remember to check the formatting, add a Sources Cited section with MLA citations, and title it.
  2. EVERYTHING is due at the end of the day on Wednesday.  By 5:00pm on Wednesday, projects must be set up and ready to go in the commons.
  3. Extra Work Time: I will be available during lunch, and after school until 5:00 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Please take advantage of this extra time if you need it!

Setting up Quotes

Why Do We Quote?- Brainstorm a list of all the reasons you might quote from an outside text in your own writing.  You must have at least 5 reasons!  Then compare your list to the list on the handout.  What is different? Why?
